Designing Icons and symbols - Squirrel
2024
Welcome to an exploration project of the Indian palm squirrel, a universal and beloved resident of India's woods and urban landscapes.
I explored visual representations, patterns, body structures, and symbolic meanings associated with them. By combining observation and artistic interpretation, I designed a range of icons using different techniques

The captivating world of the Indian palm squirrel (Funambulus palmarum), a beloved resident of India's cities and woods. The natural habitat and behaviour of the squirrel serve as inspiration for this project, which then delves further into an analysis of its anatomy. Each phase builds on the previous one by constant sketching, observation and photography, directing the project through a thorough concept development process.
Iteration and improvement are essential phases when basic concepts are developed into more complex representations. This journey ends in abstraction, where several artistic mediums are employed to capture the essence of the squirrel. Feedback is critical to refining and ensuring these ideas make sense theoretically and visually.
Over 200 distinct icons have been created due to this lengthy process. The experimenting with formations, strokes, brush strokes, textures, and digital effects is evident in these icons. They include conceptual depictions resulting from thoroughly comprehending squirrels' activities, motions, and bodily compositions. The project explores patterns and symbolic purposes drawn from direct portrayal and abstract understanding in addition to showcasing the beauty of the Indian palm squirrel.
